Sawaddee kha. I think this is a good topic kha. It is a stereotype in the media that should be diminished. I have met a lot of friends from the Northeastern and they are intelligent kind and highly educated and possess other qualities a nice person would have. I sometimes unintentionally say something offensive such as using the word "Jaew" or "Lao" and then I had to stop myself and apologize. I use those words out of familiarity and I think it is because the mainstream media portrayed them that way (when I was in Thailand) and I was stupid enough to absorb and accept it.
Now when I read or watch something I always tell myself that this is the idea that the media is trying to get across and it might not be the whole truth. I don't have to believe or feel the same way they are trying persuade me. I feel that we as comsumers have powers to direct the media. We don't have to feed on everything that they give us. Most of the people in the media are living on our money because we are paying for the thing called "entertainment" either directly or indirectly and that is what they are getting paid from. Thus if we see things that are not right and should be changed, we can send feedbacks to the certain company who produced it.
Another ridiculous thing I have noticed is that for one movie, one actor/actress would get paid so much money, much more than one person's entire life saving. Why is that? Well... I.. who knows nothing ...na da..about the entertainment industry ... think that the company knows that they can SELL the movie for much more. And who pay for those?!? if not us who pay for those movie tickets.
umm I have been in America for years and I know that it is not that much better here. There are still certain stereotypes that are not quite nice. African American, Mexican, and even Asians are still considered second class citizen in comparison to the Caucasians. This stereotyping is not quite clear though but that might be because I am in a surrounding that class and nationality are not relevant.
The point that I want to get across is that we are all human beings and in our life time, please don't let the media to get the best of us. Be a cosumer who consumes intelligently and don't let the media consume you.
Ummm quite long and I apologize for my English. It is hard for me to type Thai and it is not that important for me to put in that much work of tying Thai...
P.S. Thank you for bringing this topic up. We can change this stereotype by starting with ourselves and people around us. Sometimes it is nice to just face it... something that are not good, talk about it and change it.
